QUEUE

Season is delighted to present Queue, an exhibition of paintings by Tony Guo.
Guo has likened his creative methodology to ‘unscripted theatre’, a notion that also chimes with his experience of coming to terms with his place in the world. Each new work made, like each day lived, is at once rehearsal and fully realised performance. Process is product. Standing in line is its own end. The paintings in Queue are underpinned by improvisation, as Guo continues to deemphasise pictorial conventions and predetermined outcomes. Passages of figuration, by turns whimsical and haunting, jostle and interlace with abstract forms and gestures. The observed fuses with the invented, the legible with the inscrutable.

ESSAY
'Before the end: on Tony Guo's Queue' by Francis McWhannell
'As with so many works by Tony Guo, there is no definite story; instead, we are presented with slippery, evocative vignettes. His paintings are informed by his experiences as a queer person stretched across multiple cultural worlds, and one can certainly begin to make observations, ponder questions, venture interpretations. But one must be content to remain in the realm of speculation. Guo's focus is the languages that painting speaks, rather than the verbiage we might seek to impose on painting.'
