If I offered you my fingernails, would you take them? is Melanie Tangaere Baldwin’s first exhibition with Season.
The six paintings depict Hinenuitepō, Murirangawhenua, Mahuika, and Taranga, whose jet-black hair forms a continuous landscape. Their adornments and clothing fuse contemporary and customary elements, underscoring the ever-present nature of the wāhine toa. The works are influenced by the paintings and illustrations of Robyn Kahukiwa and Peter Gossage, which Tangaere Baldwin grew up with. She comments, ‘They are illustrations from an imagined book. The book would be about care, loyalty, and unconditional familial love. And it would be dedicated to my first cousins.’
