HE KARANGA KARAMEA

Raukura Turei
Raukura Turei
20.08.26–19.09.26
He Karanga Karamea is an exhibition of new paintings by Raukura Turei. There is a celebration at Season from 4 to 6pm on Saturday 29 August.
The exhibition explores essential structures and cycles: the creation of the world, the genesis of humankind, birth and death. At its heart is karamea (red ochre), a material that recalls and calls out to Kurawaka, where the ikura of Papatūānuku flowed and Hineahuone was formed from the fertile red earth. Working with karamea and other earthen pigments, Turei creates sweeping gestures that suggest layers of whakapapa, strata of whenua, and the bodies of wāhine—particularly the tara and the whare tangata. He Karanga Karamea also honours the late Robyn Kahukiwa, whose explorations of atua wāhine and mana wāhine are of enduring importance to Turei.
