BTM: Season is the latest chapter in a series of exhibitions and works developed by 박성환 Sung Hwan Bobby Park over the past seven years. The BTM series reflects on the artist’s experiences as a queer person and on the anti-LGBTQ+ position and practices of the South Korean military.
The title BTM refers to 방탄모 bangtanmo, bulletproof helmets that Park reimagines using ceramics. It also alludes to the term ‘bottom’ and to BTS, a K-pop boy band that achieved global fame in recent years. Park was born and raised in 청주시 Cheongju, South Korea, and moved to Aotearoa in 2000. To maintain his Korean citizenship, he was required to complete two years of military service from 2012 to 2014, during which time he had to conceal his sexuality. In 2018, he discovered that the army had engaged in entrapment, creating fake dating profiles to identify queer personnel. Those ‘caught’ were subjected to interrogation and dishonourably discharged, effectively limiting their access to civic and health services. In BTM: Season, Park creates a cohort of ceramic Marines he calls Rumpties. Their diverse bodies are modelled on onggi, voluptuous earthenware vessels used for fermentation and storage. They wear his trademark BTMs, entities that are delicate but also evocative of resilience and resistance. These are embellished with materials that carry queer or feminine connotations: foundation, bronzer, eyeliner, a hair extension. Bearing the traces of injury or trauma, the Rumpties nevertheless appear defiant, strong, and battle-ready. If they are sometimes submissive, it is by choice. The 이빨사진 Teeth Photos surrounding the ceramic figures were produced by Park during the period of his military service. Since photography was not allowed, he took the pictures covertly. The term ‘teeth photo’ typically refers to posed, heroic images—images that stimulate chatter. Park’s images are more candid, revealing everyday moments of tiredness, boredom, cheekiness, and leisure. He maintains warm relationships with almost all the Marines shown, most of whom are heterosexual and remain in Korea.
